Roaring Fork Valley: Recreation Highlights


With 5 ski resorts, countless miles of mountain biking and hiking trails and the mighty Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers it doesn’t matter where you are in the Roaring Fork Valley you can find fantastic recreation opportunities to enjoy! Here are some highlights throughout the valley:

Aspen: With four of the five major ski resorts in the Roaring Fork Valley clustered around the town of Aspen it is a skier’s paradise! The Aspen Snowmass resort system encompasses Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass Mountain and Buttermilk Mountain, all fantastic places to enjoy downhill skiing.

Basalt: The small town of Basalt is located a few miles north of Aspen and is known for its world-class fly fishing. Every year countless fisherman come from all over the world to fish the outflow of the Reudi Reservoir, known for “monster hogs” as the vibrant fishing community says.

Carbondale: Centrally located and known as the active hub of the mid-valley Carbondale boasts miles of fantastic mountain biking trails including the Prince Creek Trail System and the Red Hill Trail System. The Prince Creek Trail System offers miles of flowing cross country trail interspersed with short, punchy climbs. The Red Hill Trail System packs a punch and is known for the technical Moab style riding with large rock drops and long technically challenging climbs.

Redstone: Nestled amongst the cliffs of the steep Crystal River Valley Redstone’s extensive trail and 4×4 road network provides a fantastic opportunity for horseback riding. Multiple local guide services offer trail ride services, though, with the length of the trail systems you can easily explore on your own!

Glenwood Springs: Located at the mouth of the Roaring Fork Valley Glenwood has long been known for the fantastic whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. With an extensive network of guide services and roadside options rafting on the Colorado River couldn’t be more accessible. The Shoshone section of the Colorado in Glenwood Canyon offers spectacular views, high canyon walls and exciting whitewater!

New Castle: Located a few miles west of Glenwood Springs, New Castle offers fantastic access to some of Colorado’s most beautiful state parks! Rifle Falls State Park and Rifle Mountain State Park are a short drive from New Castle and offer beautiful views of lush vegetation, unique waterfalls and massive limestone
